New York, NY, April 1999 - Professional Examination Service (PES) is pleased to announce an agreement with the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) for a study to update and validate the body of knowledge underlying the practice of human resource management. HRCI is implementing an ongoing program of updates to the body of knowledge, as part of its commitment to maintaining the currency of its two certification programs - Professional in Human Resource Management (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resource Management (SPHR). The body of knowledge provides the foundation on which HRCI maintains and defends the content validity of its certification programs. The study of practice will be based on data gathered from multiple sources, including literature reviews; focus panels; critical incidents interviews; and reviews by subject-matter experts, both practitioners and educators. Using this approach, data gathered from one source can be used to confirm and supplement data collected from other sources, thereby enhancing the validity of the resulting delineation. Input will be sought from a broad cross-section of human resource stakeholders, including PHRs, SPHRs, supervisors, employers, educators, consultants, and researchers, as well as representatives of HRCI. The revised delineation will then be validated through a nationwide survey of 6000 practicing PHRs and SPHRs. The Human Resource Certification Institute is the credentialing affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). HRCI establishes standards for human resource professionals and recognizes individuals who have met HRCI's requirements for mastering the body of knowledge in human resource management. Nearly 32,000 individuals have been certified as PHR or SPHR since HRCI''s first examination was administered in 1976. The Society for Human Resource Management is the leading voice of the human resource profession, representing more than 115,000 members worldwide. SHRM provides its membership with education and information services, conferences and seminars, government and media representation, online services, and publications that equip human resource professionals to become leaders and decision makers within their organizations.
